My elderly parent has an inoperable stomach tumour. I am writing to express my concern about the way that my parent was treated recently at the Oncology Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital. My parent was due for their first radiotherapy treatment. In my opinion, there seemed to be a lack of communication and a lack of empathy with their situation.
There seemed to be no sense of knowing that my parent was coming and what their medical condition was. My parent was informed that they would be looked after by a specific nurse. There was no nurse by the name they mentioned and from my parent's reports, nobody else seemed to know what was going on.
After having the markings to indicate the location of the tumour, the person who was in charge of administering the ray treatment dose rudely asked where is my parent supposed to have it. In my opinion, this was insensitive, unprofessional and showed poor communication between staff members of the centre. Can you imagine how frightening this must have been?
At the completion of the treatment, my parent was then made to walk a considerable distance, unsupervised back to their car. My parent will not be impressed that I have written this email. They are fiercely independent and does not like to make a fuss. I am writing to make you aware that greater respect and clearer communication is necessary.
Yours sincerely.
