"Medication safety for my adult child"

About: Joondalup Health Campus

(as a service user),

My adult child suffers from severe mental health issues and alcoholism, they have been in a bad way and recently, they stabbed themselves and was taken to JHC police also attended. They had been in the hospital the previous day and was given a script for 50 valium and I believe they took 22 of these tablets. I was not happy with the psych team and rang JHC last evening to ask why they had released my child yet again with more pills, the person I spoke to was not medical and called me sweetheart which is very unprofessional and hung up. Normally I am full of praise of JHC but not on this occasion.

Dear perseusmm63,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Care Opinion regarding your concerns above.

I am sorry to read of your adult son/daughter’s mental health issues and acknowledge that it must be extremely difficult and frustrating for you when concerns come up about their treatment. We do not have details of the specific case and can make general comments only. We have checked and found that Diazepam scripts are typically for 50 tablets.

I apologise for the way you were addressed when you phoned the hospital. We have forwarded your comment to our administration supervisors to allow feedback to staff. It should serve as a reminder to consider how their language may be perceived by patients and family members.

We would very much like to respond to your concerns and answer any questions you have in detail. Could you please make contact with Joondalup Health Campus’ Consumer Liaison Officers on 08 9400 9672 or email consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealthcom.au.

We hope that your child is receiving the necessary support and guidance to assist them through their journey to improved health.

Kind regards,

Dr Martin Chapman

Head of Mental Health Services
