"Post-operative treatment"

About: Box Hill Hospital

(as the patient),

I recently went in for an operation in the morning and came out at just before midday. I walked around for a couple of hours in the afternoon, went to the toilet and walked around some more. I was in bed by 10:00pm.

At about 12:00am the nurse came in and said they would see me in the morning to change my dressing. A bit after that, another nurse came in and introduced themselves. The nurse said something about that I had to do more moving around. Half asleep, I asked what was the problem? I cleared my throat/coughed and the nurse then told me I had to move to another ward. I was taken to another ward that had restricted access. I asked a nurse in that ward, what was going on and they said I had to have a blood test for COVID-19.

I had an operation that morning, supposed to be in recovery, I was still getting over the anaesthetic. Nobody listened to me. I asked if I could move back to where I was in the other ward and was told I couldn’t until results came back.

The next day, the doctor that operated found me and checked me out from the operation. I asked him why I was moved to this ward so they checked my lungs and chest and said I could go and to come back in a week for my follow-up appointment for the operation.

I asked if I could ring my child to pick me up and the nurse said I had to stay a little longer. I felt like I was treated like a prisoner. The results came back and I was all clear. In my opinion. they wouldn’t listen to me. They operated on me the morning before, so I believe they would have known I was ok.

The nurse was nice who discharged me and so were the girls who looked after me through the day of my operation, never had dramas with them. I just thought – this isn’t like Box Hill. I have never had any trouble, I’ve been here a few times and they were really good.

Dear melonmh73

Thank you so much for your balanced comments regarding your experience at Eastern Health's Box Hill Hospital. I'm pleased that your surgery went well and I trust you are recovering well from this.

The impact of COVID-19 have caused so many things within hospitals to change, and change rapidly. I'm sorry you felt you were not listened to and from what I read it sounds that we could have done a little better explaining why these things were being undertaken.

If you do have the need to attend the hospital again, I hope you will have a more positive experience, like you had prior to this time. I will take the opportunity to share your comments with the team at Box Hill Hospital so they can reflect again on the critical importance of listening, providing good explanations and the 'right' information.

Take care and best wishes

David
