"Communication and food"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / ASB 4N - Haematology and Oncology Ward

(as the patient),

Upon arriving back to my private room after a chest x-ray, I was told all my belongings had been moved to another common room which was inconveniently located from the common bathroom due to my lack of mobility and incontinence. I understand the reason they gave my room to someone with a higher priority due to, I believe, infectious or sensitive conditions, however, I felt the manner in which it was handled was very rude and underhanded.

Also, sadly the food/meals leave a lot to be desired, in particular, the egg and mayo sandwiches, the eggs taste watery, as if rehydrated and in my opinion, there is no sign of mayo anywhere in sight. The most disappointing fact is that as a hospital caterer for 27 years of service, I recall our standards and level of quality was top-notch, I, in fact, was one of the best, not to brag, but perhaps you can comprehend my disappointment.

As my health issues are many and complicated, I am frequently admitted to hospital and it would be wonderful if the food standard could be rectified at least in some small capacity.

Dear browserke75,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding your care during your time at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

I am sorry to hear that the staff moved you out of the room whilst you were having an x-ray without being adequately informed. Please be assured that your experience has been provided to the staff and they have been reminded to communicate effectively when moving patients within the unit.

It’s well recognised that eating and drinking well whilst in hospital is important for all patients’ health and recovery. Food in NSW Health hospitals is supplied by HealthShare Food Services who have been informed of your concerns. Your insight and feedback is very valuable and will assist in improving each patient’s experience and care.

Regards,

Natalie Maier

Sadly I feel this is a standard response and doubt that anything will change regarding the food issue. However I thank you for your reply.
