I felt my stay in the psychiatric unit was very distressing, and believe the treatment I received there only made my mental state even worse than it already was before I was brought in. I discharged myself after 48hr, feeling utterly alone, still suicidal, yet completely out of options for places to turn to for help. I was very disheartened and had lost all faith in the local mental health team.
The day after returning home, on a Saturday, I received a call from Matt at the community mental health clinic ~ I was very wary, very guarded, but he took the time to listen to me and did not judge me at all or belittle my experience. He validated my concerns and offered insightful, practical advice to help me through the weekend. He called me again the following day, and once again he was patient with me when I had difficulty expressing my thoughts due to severe anxiety and my current state of burnout.
Despite my, in my opinion, poor treatment in APU, I would like this to be listed as a complement to Matt ~ he would not have realised it, but he restored a tiny bit of hope in me after one of the worst experiences of my life.
