"Being confined in bed"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Armitage House

(as the patient),

As I was confined to bed, I found the days long without a TV. I feel Wi-Fi would be of great benefit. I was watching my phone but run out of data. I noticed you have Wi-Fi and believe you just need to adjust your code. In my opinion, it would be of great benefit and most hospitals have this.

Dear no-wifi,

Unfortunately, I am sad to say that in this modern era, Wonthaggi Hospital is not yet able to provide patients with access to free Wi-Fi. I am very sorry. We have very outdated IT systems and we don't have a dedicated/separate patient Wi-Fi network – what we’ve done in the past is added patient devices to existing wireless networks that can communicate with BCH devices however this is a major security risk because it can allow for malware to spread from a patient’s device to the BCH corporate network. We had a significant cybersecurity incident in the last year that lost all systems and emails etc for months and so are very cautious now about how we link with non-BCH devices.

I can assure you that our IT team is working with the regional IT experts to try to remedy this, but it is still likely to be some months away at best.

I can also let you know that we are planning some renovations to Armitage that will facilitate access to TV's in rooms but that is also some months away.

I know that none of this is consolation for the long hours you will have spent recently in Armitage - please be reassured though that we are endeavouring to get these things sorted for future patients.

Kind Regards, Jan
