From the time my support person and I arrived at the Admissions Centre, we didn't have to wait long for the paperwork to be processed. We were escorted by a staff member to the pre-op area. I was informed of what was happening by the staff and then moved to the operating theatre around 2 and a half hours after my arrival. I was brought to Ward 6H and monitored closely by the nursing staff.
The next morning, the specialist came to see me and decided the skin flap had lost its colour. I was taken down to the operating again that morning. The second operation took a few hours as well and I was brought back to the ward. From this point on it was like I had wrap-around nursing support. As I began to recover I was informed of what took place.
At all times I was confident and reassured about the care I was getting. It would be impossible for me to identify who cared the most. But certainly, the following nurses were more reassuring, gentler, maintained eye contact when talking to me, made sure I understood what was being said, and conferred at length with other nurses during handover. The nurses were: Sandra, Rhianna, Jane and Ella.
Thank you for enabling me to share my simple story. I'm sitting at home marvelling at the RPH training, the teamwork and dedication of all the staff
Thank you very much.
