"Painful night"

About: Prince of Wales Private Hospital

(as a service user),

I had hand surgery and when I came round I asked for the pain killers that they said they would mind and give to me when I woke up for my shoulder pain. I was told not to take any on the day of surgery and when I had pain they would be dispensed.

The nurse said my hand is blocked and I can’t have any pain. I said it’s for my shoulder which at the time, felt like it was out of its socket. Then they said it’s not on my chart so, bad luck. I requested they phone the surgeon, or pain specialist or GP. I believe they said they're not bothering them.

At this point, I removed the needle in my arm, got dressed and was on my way out, when the doctor for that ward stopped me and wanted to know why I was leaving. I went back to my bed but stayed dressed ready to leave when the doctor gave some pain killers, but not mine.

Early in the morning, the pain was terrible, I asked for a painkiller, it seemed the nurses just laughed, I was walking down the hall when I saw the surgeon. They requested my pain killers but they had vanished. The surgeon then gave me some other pain killers which worked.

The nurse was not nice in my opinion and there was nothing done about missing painkillers. I’ve had more than 20 surgeries, mainly on smashed shoulders, I’ve never felt pain like that and for such a long time.

Both surgeon and pain specialists have apologised, and hopefully, I believe they both said they would remove that nurse from the surgical ward as it seemed I was not the only one complaining. In my opinion, I always thought private is better but now, I don’t think so.
