"My birthing experience"

About: Sale Hospital / Women's and Children's

(as the patient),

Most of my experience was wonderful. The midwives were great, it took a bit of fighting but I got, mostly, the birth I wanted.

In the end, I had my confidential medical information given to someone I did not want it given to, without being asked if it was even okay.

The person was not friend, family or medical professional. My confidential medical information should never have been shared. I have been left feeling extremely vulnerable, violated and upset.

There is no way for me to have that person not know about my medical conditions, that had been kept private for quite a while.

I am extremely angry at the lack of respect for my rights.

Based on my experience, doctor-patient confidentiality does not seem to be a thing at this hospital.

Dear Little Wolf,

My name is Mandy Pusmucans and I am the Director of Nursing at Central Gippsland Health. I am pleased that your experience at the recent birth of your baby was wonderful. However, I am very sorry to hear of your concerns in relation to the sharing of your information.

We have a very strict protocol in place around the sharing of patient information and I would be very keen to work with you to understand what has happened and implement improvements to our processes.

If you feel that you can, I would very much like to hear from you and can be contacted on (03) 5143 8512 or at mandy.pusmucans@cghs.com.au

Again, I am very sorry for your concerns and look forward to being in touch.

I hope that you and your new baby are going really well.

Kind Regards,

Mandy

Dear Little Wolf

Thank you for making contact with me last week and for the phone discussion today. It has enabled me to fully understand your concerns which I have now discussed with the people involved in your care. As you said, you don’t want others to have the same experience.

Maintaining confidentiality is extremely important and whilst the team members I spoke to are very clear about this and aware of our policies around confidentiality, your story has been a strong reminder of the impact this has on individuals. This will be reinforced for us all as we undertake organisation-wide Person-Centered Care training that reminds us to focus on our patients with respect, enabling empowerment, and with empathy and compassion.

Again, thank you for telling your story and for talking with me over the past week or so. I wish you and your family all the very best.

Of course, please don’t hesitate to contact me on (03)5143 8512 or at mandy.pusmucans@cghs.com.au if you wish to talk further.

Kind regards

Mandy
