"Hand operation"

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

Recently, my parent required a hand operation following a work accident. They were very pleased with the care that was provided. They were able to receive the surgery less than 24 hrs after they first presented to another health service, who referred them on to Albany.

Following the surgery, there was no follow-up appointment discussed or booked. My parent followed routine aftercare. As the week went on their hand was becoming itchy and uncomfortable, I believe what my parent thought was part of the healing process.

Over a week later, my parent found out where to book a follow-up appointment. At this appointment, it was discovered that a drip (IVC) was left in my parent's hand that had been operated on. There was redness and slight swelling, I believe signs the site was becoming infected.

Fortunately, my parent is fit and healthy and dodged a potentially fatal bullet.

Dear mercurymp74,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your parent’s recent stay at Albany Health Campus. I really appreciate the time you have taken to bring this to our attention.

Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of everyone involved in what happened with your parent. I would like to assure you that a situation such as this is not the standard of care and professionalism we strive for as a health service. Your parent should not have been sent home with a drip still situated in their hand and a follow-up appointment should have been arranged for your parent soon after their surgery.

I would be very grateful if you or your parent could contact me so that I can understand more about what happened. This will help us in undertaking a clinical investigation, which will determine how this happened and what we can do to ensure that it does not happen again. If you are happy to get back in touch, please feel free to call me on 9892 2647.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Juan Clark
