"Faulty equipment and staff attitudes"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Geriatric Medicine Department & Wards V5&V6

(as other),

The shower hose in the bathroom of room 6 on level 7 is a soft plastic that kinks easily and sprays hot water on the patient using it. While it may not cause 3rd-degree burns, I believe it gives the user a fright that could cause other problems such as a fall.

Recently, a patient was being assisted back to their bed. The patient stated several times to their helpers that they wanted to do the count to 3 so they were fully prepared for the painful move.

I believe the staff took no notice of the patient's request to do a 1,2,3 and put them on the bed. The patient let out a blood-curdling roar during the process that made me feel sick and angry.  The procedure was going to cause them pain that I believe may have been lessened if they had felt in control of their journey.

In my opinion, once we are older, we apparently lose the right to be heard and respected in this often patronizing ageist world.

Dear equuleusyp84,

Thank you for providing your feedback via Care Opinion. I am sorry that you feel that older people lose the right to be heard and respected, and I can assure you that is definitely not representative of how our staff at Fremantle Hospital feel, think or act.

In relation to the patient being assisted to their bed, in order to investigate this matter properly, I need the patient to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 9431 2787. This will enable us to complete a full investigation with the patient’s consent, which is required.

Thank you for alerting us to the shower hose; I will ensure the Nurse Unit Manager inspects the hose and raises a repair order if the shower hose is faulty.

Thank you and regards,

Neil Doverty

Thank you for undertaking to have shower hoses checked. I will not be visiting again so I will never know if the problem is fixed.

As the patient I referred to appeared powerless in their situation I cannot see that they would wish to complain which is the reason I pointed out my concern.

Thank you
