"Ageism"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Orthopaedics & Ward 4A

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the ED at night. I am an older person and felt as though I was being treated like a joke with leg pain. No examination or tests were conducted to determine the cause of my pain but rather, in my opinion, a 'they are just seeking drugs' attitude.  A doctor did say they would arrange for me to have pain relief which when offered was paracetamol 1000mgs.

The doctor saw me the next morning and asked if I had private health cover then told me I would be going to a private hospital for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, I was tired and in pain and didn't realise I could refuse the transfer.

I then spent 10 days in pain at that other hospital until the same referring doctor decided to Xray my hip and discovered the cause of my pain. When I read my discharge summary, I believe at least 60% was incorrect and it was obvious to me that no one was listening to me. I have submitted feedback separately to that hospital.

Just short of a few weeks later I returned to FSH and received exemplary care. Thank you for restoring my faith in the health care system but in my opinion,  make sure you don't turn get older.

Dear equuleusyp84,

Thank you for taking the time to again provide feedback via Care Opinion. I am sorry that you were unhappy with the treatment you received in the Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department. Your complaints are serious in nature and as such we would like to investigate what happened properly. Please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 to provide your full name and contact details, should you wish us to complete a full investigation.

I am glad that you received exemplary care in a subsequent visit to Fiona Stanley Hospital. It is unfortunate that you feel you are exposed to “ageism” (the title of your complaint), however, again, I assure you that is definitely not representative of how our staff across the Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group feel, think or act.

Thank you and regards,

Neil Doverty
