"Answer the phone"

About: Derby Hospital

(as a service user),

I have tried to contact Derby hospital by phone on 9193 3333 and 9193 3200.   Every time (6), the phone has rung out. I have a family member in the hospital acutely unwell and have their permission to speak to staff about their condition.

Also, my family member is on IV potassium on a cardiac monitor in a room by themselves, which I believe is nowhere near the nurse's station on the general ward. In my opinion, ever heard of Swiss cheese?

Dear indigozt65,

I am very sorry to hear about your experience. In what must be an already stressful situation, to not be able to talk to staff about your family member’s condition would have created more angst. We have investigated why the phone numbers were ringing out or not being diverted; there was a software upgrade to our ICT system that unexpectedly caused a switchboard error, we have been able to rectify that error and are regularly testing the phone lines. Again we can only apologise for the error and the impact it had on you.

Derby Hospital prides itself on a high level of care, and recently purchased some new observation machines, while they look great they also look like cardiac monitors. An observation machine was used to monitor your relative while receiving IV treatment, but clearly our staff could have explained the purpose of the machine more clearly to put both your relative and your minds’ at ease and not cause unneeded concern to your family. I can confirm the clinical staff followed medication guidelines in the administration of the IV medication.

I hope your next experience with Derby hospital will be a positive one. If you wish to discuss your family member’s care in more detail our Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery, Prabeesh Pillai is happy to meet with you, he can be contacted on Prabeesh.Pillai@health.wa.gov.au or 9193 3337.

Thanks for your feedback.

Kind regards

Nick Mildenhall
