"Emergency Department visit"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage child attended the Emergency Department (ED) recently, late in the afternoon. They had suffered a bee sting and called into a local pharmacy to get some antihistamine, where they were told to go straight to ED as their tongue was swollen and they were finding it difficult to speak and breathe.

When they arrived at ED they were taken straight through for treatment and was given an adrenaline shot. Both my child and their partner, who took them there to ED, have said how wonderful the nurses were. However, the treating doctor was not so wonderful.

My child was apparently asked by the doctor to ‘speak properly’ which I believe was difficult as their lips and tongue were swollen. When asked to stick out their tongue, the doctor commented, they looked like a kid with Downs Syndrome, and then tried to blame my child for the doctor giving them the adrenaline when, in my opinion, their reaction was supposedly a normal reaction to a bee sting by saying, my child was panicking, which made the doctor panic!

I was horrified to hear of the unprofessional way they were treated and have to wonder if it was because it was two teenagers presenting without an adult.

I really hope that this experience doesn’t put either of them off seeking medical assistance if required in the future.

Dear wearingdj55,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your teenager’s experience at the Albany Health Campus Emergency Department. It is important for us to know how our patients are thinking and feeling about their interactions with our staff and services. I was sorry to read this account of how your teenager experienced their interaction with one of our staff. As a parent, this must have been distressing for you to hear. We have initiated an investigation and I would value the opportunity to speak with you and your teenager. This will help us provide feedback to all concerned and assist us to support young people’s health seeking behaviour. We can speak either by phone or arrange a meeting, at a time that is convenient for you. If you would like to contact me, please feel free to contact me on 9892 2647.

Yours sincerely

Dr Barbara King
