"ED disrespectfully treated"

About: Derby Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I presented to ED as I was asked to do an emergency bloods by the specialist doctor in another hospital the previous evening during my phone consultation. The GP is always booked out a week in advance. I felt the clinician treated me like I was a crazy person during triage and said they had never heard of the tests I had been asked to get. When I protested that this was not helpful I felt they aggressively got up and said they would find someone else to triage me. The next person also did not believe me and wanted to see the phone appt.

I was told I would have to wait over an hour and basically treated with disdain. I was then left in the waiting room being physically poked by a person that was clearly very intoxicated and felt very unsafe. No staff were around but seen laughing in the corridor. Apparently, there was an emergency but in my opinion, did not look like it. The intoxicated patient then let in another person without them going through the covid checks and went out.

Unacceptable this is a public hospital especially when you compare it with a metro hospital where you are treated with respect and given professional care. Last time I was in ED was also awful how they speak to you.

Dear echody56,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Derby Hospital.

I am sorry to hear that you were left feeling disrespected and ignored during your visit to our hospital. Everyone should expect to feel safe in a health care environment and I am concerned that this wasn’t your experience.

While there are times when an unexpected emergency takes place which requires the immediate attention of our clinicians, when these situations occur, we expect that our team keeps waiting patients informed about any potential delays along the way.

I would like to gain a better understanding of what took place and to support you to get the care that you need. My name is Nick Mildenhall and I am the Operations Manager for Derby Hospital. If you are happy to speak with me, please call me on 0419 043 610 or you can email me at Nicholas.Mildenhall@health.wa.gov.au.

Alternately, I will be sharing your experience with the Clinical Nurse Manager in the ED so, if you prefer, please call Zoe Brooke on (08) 9193 3212 or via email at Zoe.Brooke@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to reflect on your care. We do value all feedback so that we can ensure that we continue to provide safe and high-quality care for everyone in the community.

I would like to reassure you that you are welcome to present to our health service at any time. I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Nick Mildenhall

Derby Operations Manager
