"Hypnobirthing Classes"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I have been fortunate enough to have 2 beautiful and positive births. However, with my first child, I ended up having an epidural when I was 8cm dilated (I didn’t know I was this far along until after the epidural) and this left me feeling a little like I had failed. Ridiculous, I know but I couldn’t help but feel that way and really wanted to be able to achieve a drug-free birth second time around.

I wasn’t able to do the Hypnobirthing course with my first pregnancy, but it was something I ensured I did the second time around to give me the best possible chance of achieving the drug-free labour that I so wanted.

Due to COVID, the course was online which I was a little worried about but Kasey’s presentation was so inspiring, it really didn’t affect it at all as I got so much out of the course.

Thanks to the Hypnobirthing course I participated in, I was fully prepared for my labour. I had been listening to the hypnobirthing meditation tracks and had affirmation posters around my house. All valuable tools that I believe allowed me to have the beautiful and natural birth I desired.

During my labouring at home, I was listening to the tracks, focusing on my affirmations and my husband set up my LED candles around the room and had essential oils diffusing. When we headed into the hospital I was calm and we set it up just like we had done at home. The nurse checked me and I was fully dilated and was ready to deliver the baby. The Hypnobirthing courses really allowed me to stay at home for as long as possible, be calm during my birth and deliver my baby drug-free, which is what I really wanted to do.

I really believe the hypnobirthing allowed me to relax into the birth and assisted me, as compared to my first birth, I did not think the surges were intense enough to already be 10cm dilated.

The following few hours were magical, with me being able to have my golden hour(s), allowing our baby to breast crawl on their own to my breast and basking in all their newborn goodness. When I went to have a shower, my husband also had skin-to-skin time with our newest baby.

The Hypnobirthing course all allowed me to really assess what we wanted and what was ok to ask for etc.  In the hours after the birth, I was regularly reliving what had just happened, with tears rolling down my eyes, with the realisation that I did it! I was on cloud nine, with oxytocin running high and I truly believe it was the hypnobirthing classes that allowed me to achieve this!

Throughout my entire labour, I felt at ease and calm with the process. I trusted in my body and my baby to know exactly what to do. It really was my dream birth and cannot recommend the Hypnobirthing classes enough.

Dear mooncf57,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback via Care Opinion. I am truly pleased that you found the antenatal classes to be so beneficial and the strategies taught within the class supported you to experience such a lovely birth.

I am also pleased that we were able to continue to create a calming environment once you arrived in the maternity Unit. We have worked hard to engage with consumers to ensure our birth suites are designed to make the transition from home to the hospital a smooth one.

I don't think we can take all the credit for your experience. You wrapped it up in a couple of words from within your beautiful story. "I did it". We only provided you with some tools and the reassurance that you could achieve what you were already capable of, so never underestimate yourself.

I wish you well for the Christmas and new year, in what I can only imagine will be a busy household. Take care.
