I believe Emergency Departments are exceptionally busy over holiday periods when GP & other services close & regions have high numbers of visitors. During the Christmas New Year period, I attended Albany ED twice and on both occasions I observed respectful, professional and skilled care.
On the 2nd occasion, I attended with my 84-year-young mother who had a chronic heart condition needing treatment. It had been for her, a debilitating Christmas. Over the 5 hours of her care in ED, she was given the information needed to make the decision about the treatment intervention, treated with kindness, respect, compassion & humour. Nurses had conversations that enabled her to be a person, not just another older person in an ED i.e. noting my parent was discussing books she was reading etc.
Across the very busy ED, staff were professional, respectful of people around her in terms of maintaining a sense of calm professionalism even though the ED was full and people were waiting.
Thank you Albany ED - you are a great team & asset to the great southern communities.
A particular thanks to Nurses; Betty, Glenn & Deb-you are great nurses! Dr Paula for respectful care & keeping my mother informed and Dr Tom for taking action with reassurance & humour.
My mother's quality of life improved immediately as a result of the treatment and you prevented an acute emergency presentation!
