"Treatment by surgeon"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Perioperative Services/Theatre/Operating Theatres

(as a parent/guardian),

I went with my adult child to a referral with orthopaedics. The first specialist doctor was professional and respectful.

My child had to wait for an orthopaedic surgeon to give their opinion on my child's' condition. In my opinion, the attitude of this doctor was beyond acceptable from a person of their standing. I felt they were arrogant, rude, insulting, confrontational and, in my opinion, a joke.

My child has been a transient and drug abuser, smoked incessantly, you name it they've done it. They have been off all drugs and smokes for 6 months and are back home. In the 6 months of being clean, my child has gained an excessive amount of weight and is now morbidly obese. However, they dress nice and shower daily.

I believe the surgeon continuously attacked my child about their weight, firing 20 questions without letting my child answer. In my opinion, the doctor spoke down to my child and had no interest in the reason why they'd been referred.

I think the surgeon considered my child a gross overweight person that was overeating, lazy and wasting their time.

My child stormed out with me and their teenager in tow. Late into the night, I understand my child was still feeling very hurt and emotional. In my opinion, what a disgrace for a doctor, years of study and training on how to be a ****.

I feel patience, caring and compassion should be a degree in itself or the surgeon's in the wrong job.

Dear earmarkkz59,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your child’s experience during their appointment at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals. I am sorry that your child felt judged and did not receive the care and support needed during their appointment. As your child is an adult, we would need their consent to look into this matter and would appreciate it if they could contact us and provide further details so we can complete an investigation.

We would value the opportunity to resolve any misunderstanding that may have occurred. All caregivers at our hospital are expected to demonstrate our core values of compassion, respect, justice, excellence and hospitality at all times when engaging with patients and their family members. We look forward to speaking with your child so we can address your feedback.
