"Emergency Department"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Presented to the department with breathlessness, nausea and lightheadedness due to my underlying condition. Admission was quick since I was not in the best state and struggling to stay alert.

However, I feel everything went downhill when I got through to be seen. I believe my doctor was very aggressive when asking questions about my past medical choices and history. I doubt that one bit that came out of my mouth was heard or listened to.

I was expecting to be taken care of and advice to be given but, in my opinion, nothing. Two Panamax and they called it a day. I explained to them how my medical condition affects me and how I was on the verge of passing out every single day. I was told they were sorry I feel that way before sending me home. I left the hospital crying, in pain beyond belief, no care plan, no prescriptions just passing me on to my GP and apparently forgetting I was even there. Never again.

Dear brankw33,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding the challenges you faced when accessing treatment at the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department.

I am sad to hear of your experience during what must have been a stressful time for you and that you felt the staff did not take care to ensure your concerns were heard in a calm and professional manner.

I am sorry that you left the Emergency Department still in pain. Without specific details it is difficult to ascertain why you were not provided with a care plan or prescription. I apologise that this situation left you feeling dismissed by staff as this is not the standard of care we aim to provide.

I can reassure you that we are reviewing the complaints, Care Opinion stories and other feedback about the Emergency Department to guide service improvement.

If you would like to discuss your concerns further please contact our Consumer Engagement Unit on (08) 9224 1637, 8 am to 4 pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au and we will attempt to resolve the issues you have raised. I respect you may like to remain anonymous, so please be assured that the Head of the Emergency Department has been made aware of your story and will be reviewing your experience with the team.

I hope you are recovering well.

Kind Regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
