"Care was second to none"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Arrived for my gyne op a few days ago.

I would like to single out a midwife who looked after me that day. I believe her name is Shona, she was on the day/arvo shift & handed over to a nurse around night time Ward 6.

The standard of her care & consideration of me was second to none!

I am hearing impaired, it can be very frustrating trying to communicate with people. Most times you say you are hearing impaired & need to lip read, only to find 10 mins later they have forgotten that & speak to you with their back turned. Shona always placed herself directly in front of me & made sure to speak clearly every time.

Her standard of care is what I believe nursing should be but is not for some nurses in my opinion.

She always had a smile on her face. It was disappointing not to see her again the next day.

I am struggling to find appropriate words to describe her friendliness, professional attitude & kindness, not to forget attention to detail.

I would also like to thank the coordinator who took me through the admittance procedure. I can't remember her name I just remember the coordinator badge. She also together with nurse Meredith in admitting also made sure to look at me when speaking. It was such a small thing but makes a huge difference to me when communicating.

I feel Shona should be recognised as errrrrr Employee of the Month.

I do hope that my letter can be passed on to Shona as a special thank you for her special brand of caring.

p.s. the food is cold by the time it gets to the patient.

Dear aragq43,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS). I am pleased to hear of the support you have been provided through your journey with Ward 6 and the staff involved with your admission. It is pleasing to hear that Shona, Meredith and the coordinator acknowledged your hearing impairment and endeavoured to always face you when speaking.

Our service strives to always provide quality, patient-centred care and I will ensure that your feedback is provided to the staff involved in your treatment and in particular Shona.

I am disappointed to hear that your meal was not hot when it was delivered to you and will forward your feedback to our Catering Department

Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards

Dr Matthew Skinner
