"Transphobia"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Adult and Older Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit (Closed and Open)

(as a friend),

My partner was admitted to Mimidi Park at Rockingham hospital and a nurse has told them they will never pass as a female and should stop hormones.

I believe this is something you should keep to yourself as it was disrespectful and rude.  I know the staff member's name but I won’t publicly shame them as I am a decent human being.

My partner is now constantly thinking they will never pass as a female and it’s affecting their mental state more.

I do want to add that only a few staff members seemed to be transphobic and everyone else was kind :)

Dear brangh34,

Please accept my apologies for your partner's experience and thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Rockingham Peel Group Health service takes the needs of people with diverse sexuality very seriously. The mental health service has in place a gender diversity working group and has recently completed external training ( Open Closets ) for staff.

Whilst the Mental Health Inpatient Unit is working towards its goal of being a consistently inclusive service for people of all gender and sexual orientation, we recognise that there are further steps to take. Feedback such as yours is very important. To help us investigate further you may wish to contact the MH service directly by phoning 65574811 and asking for Sue Thistlethwaite. You may also wish to pass on the name of the nurse that you have identified, so that individual education and supervision can be provided to them.

I also note your comment that most staff were kind, and I thank-you for this feedback. Your positive comment, in turn reinforces to staff the importance of the way they work with people with diverse sexuality.

Regards

Kath Smith
