"ED experience"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / Trauma & Reconstructive & Plastic Surgery Services

(as a relative),

My husband nearly amputated his thumb. We were put straight into the ED. Dr Stephanie was excellent with her care and explanations. The use of technology for her to confer with a specialist at RPH sharing Xrays and photos was great. Within 3 hours we knew when he was flying to Perth and there was a good chance of his thumb being saved. He was admitted overnight to KHC where he received the best of care.

When he arrived at RPH he was expected and was sent to the ward very quickly. The surgeon did a great job and his thumb has already regained a lot of movement. The physio staff have also been very good, both in person and through teleconference.

Dear hoz4,

We are so pleased to hear that your husband has received such great care from the WA Health system. Our interface with the metropolitan hospitals is something we work very hard on to ensure seamless care for our country patients. It is really encouraging to hear that Stephanie was able to provide clear explanations about what was happening with your husband’s injury and treatment, it can be quite scary and frustrating when you don’t have clear information about what is happening – I will let Dr Stephanie know about your kind words and I’m sure this will make her day!

It’s excellent news that your husband (and his thumb) are on the road to recovery and that you have been able to make use of our excellent telehealth technology. Hopefully this has prevented some travel to Perth for you, and allowed your husband to access care closer to home.

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide feedback, it is so valuable for us to hear about areas in which we can improve, but also to get the confirmation of the things that are working.

Warm regards,

Rhiannon Hosking
