"Catchment area for care"

About: Alzheimer's Queensland

(as a carer),

After a recent followup with my parent's geriatrician, the nurse navigator at Logan Hospital recommended I look at getting day respite services using Alzheimer's Qld.

My parent has Alzheimer's disease. They find the general provider day centre social activities not stimulating enough as they are not that far gone yet, so I really wanted something that caters for people with memory difficulties.

We have been ACAT assessed and are waiting for a home care package. The waiting lists are very long, so far we've been waiting 9 months and are expecting to wait another 6 months. Therefore, we currently only have CHSP funding to work with, and it seems for whatever Government funding reason, Alzheimer's Queensland don't offer services if you live in the Logan area.

Staff were very apologetic but it felt like they gave me the bum's rush as soon as they figured out we were in the Logan catchment. There is no option for privately funded respite there either. So if I wanted to try out the respite day and overnight services at a place that should represent the gold standard for Alzheimer's care, it's not possible until my parent's home care package is approved, in my opinion, just because I and my parent can't afford to own a house in Brisbane city council area.

Thanks for helping to maintain my already-high care workload, and keeping it hard for me to figure out how best to choose a permanent care facility for my parent.
