"COVID-19 Lockdown education classes"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Family Birth Centre

(as a service user),

Due to COVID-19, King Edward's Family Birth Centre offer Parent Education Classes via Scopia (online). I feel this is wonderful for working parents to be and the environment: reducing travel. I believe it would be wonderful if they could be pre-recorded with an avenue for dialogue with educator as required?

WA declared a 5 day lock-down Feb 2021. No notification was provided to confirm/deny if parental classes (online or in-person) were going ahead. I feel it would be great to have had this communicated preemptively.

Given the support person is a close contact of the birthing mother, requiring support person to wear a mask seems rather defunct in my opinion, when the mother is not. Would it be possible to have this reviewed? Under Emergency Management Act 2005 Section 72A Face Covering Directions, exceptions 4c is applicable. The clear enunciation or visibility of the mouth is essential for the birthing mother's support person to instill comfort and support.

Dear correspomdencehm45,

Thank you for providing me with your thoughts and suggestions regarding the online parent education classes at KEMH. I apologise for the delay in responding to you.

The COVID-19 pandemic and periods of State Government restrictions and lock-downs has certainly changed the way that we have welcomed patients to our hospital and led to adjustments to some of the services that we provide at the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

I am glad to hear that you found the movement of parent education classes to an online option helpful during recent lock-down periods.

I am however sorry that you were not given prior notification regarding the parent education classes back in February. We will ensure that, where possible, sufficient notification to any change in the way classes are delivered is provided to the participants.

The continuation of online classes and the option of recorded classes for working parents or for families that live significant distances from the hospital during times with no State restrictions, is something that can definitely be explored.

The requirement to observe physical distancing and the wearing of masks at KEMH during times of restrictions or lock-down are imposed by the State Government. However, there may be exceptional circumstances where these requirements need to be reviewed. These needs can be discussed with your health care team, and the request will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Thank you once again for taking the time to provide me with your suggestions. Feedback such as yours is important so that we can ensure that we are providing the best healthcare possible for our patients.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
