"Lack of beds"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Outpatient Department (Eyes & General)

(as the patient),

With the lack of beds at Sydney Eye Hospital, I was sent home after retinal surgery. I am in my 60s and live on my own. I was instructed to hang my head down to assist in a successful surgery outcome.

To allow the gas inserted to assist in closing the retinal tear, I was also told to return the next morning to have my dressing removed and my surgery assessed - in my opinion, it was a poor assessment.

Had I been given a bed to stay overnight and not struggle to make my way home and return the next day, I believe I would have had a more positive result.

Why have the beds been reduced to such a low level - 18 beds in the heart of Sydney? Please explain why the beds have been reduced to such a low level!

Dear likeablegh75,

Thank you for expressing your concern on Care Opinion and the Emergency Department Patient Survey. The decision to discharge a patient after surgery is made by the surgeon relating to the clinical care required for the patient.

Almost all procedures in ophthalmology are on a day-only basis, and patients who have day surgery are required to have an escort home and support for the night.

I apologise that you felt unsupported the night of your surgery, and I acknowledge how difficult the trip home and the recovery period was for you.

I have asked the manager of the area to discuss your experience with staff to better understand the importance of ensuring our patients are well prepared. The hospital is also launching an expanded preadmission service in March this year which will better inform patients what to expect and assist them in planning for recovery after surgery.

If you would like to follow up further, please contact me through SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au with your contact number and time to call.

All the best for your recovery

Regards,

Alan
