"Discharge nurse's appalling behaviour"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Short Stay Surgical Unit Ward 4A & Day Surgery Unit Ward 4B/4G

(as a carer),

General staff at RPH are usually awesome, kind and responsive. However, in my opinion, discharge nurses are beyond the words of ridiculous and appalling behaviour! My spouse had day surgery for the second time and both times, I believe they have been mistreated by certain discharge nurses. This time I was also affected by this behaviour and I think it’s time something is done about it.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the nurse, nor can I seem to get further information from staff about them. However, I can only describe their self-presentation and what I feel is ugly behaviour and I hope you could do the research!

Although I was there to collect my spouse, this nurse of concern would not let me in with “worrying face”, so they forcefully, I felt, grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room several times refusing me the right to see my partner (100% misconduct I think). I feel this was very unusual as I’ve never experienced such treatment.

Soon after that, I feel they forcefully insisted on pulling vomit bag out of my hands (several times) as I’d been given by another beautiful nurse also in charge (I believe her name was Ruth, also registered nurse) as my partner was feeling very nauseous and dizzy. Every time I was given vomit bag by other nurses to have it in the car during transport back home, the nasty nurse would have torn it out of my hands without any apology!

Unbelievable, unspeakable behaviour in my opinion! Furthermore, in my opinion, they literally kicked my partner out of bed while still in bad condition (half-unconscious) and caused them huge pain before entering the car. No discharge paperwork nor further information on pain treatment at home!

Dear libratn36,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding staff behaviour and the discharge of your spouse from Royal Perth Hospital. I am very sorry to hear of the difficulties yourself and your spouse encountered and acknowledge the additional distress this may be causing you both.

I sincerely apologise that you were denied entry to collect your spouse and for you leaving our hospital feeling you were poorly treated by our nursing staff. Please be assured what you have described is not the standard of care we aim to provide. I am concerned to read that you felt your spouse was prematurely discharged from hospital and your report that vomit bags were taken from you several times, however without specific details it is difficult to ascertain why this occurred.

I would like the opportunity to investigate your concerns so we can learn and improve from your experience with us. I invite you to contact our Consumer Engagement Unit on 9224 1637 or email RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au so that we can discuss further information and better investigate your situation.

Whilst I respect you may wish to remain anonymous, we take these complaints very seriously.

Please be assured that senior Surgical Division management have been made aware of your story and will be reviewing it with the team so we can learn from your experiences.

I hope we are able to be of assistance in resolving your concerns and that your spouse is recovering well.

Kind Regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
