"A current cancer patient"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Gynaecological oncology Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a carer),

My parent has had 2 previous operations to remove cancerous tumours in the past 6 years. They were referred again several months ago as they now have numerous tumours again and was told they would be operated on again in the next two months to remove these tumours, so we prepared for the upcoming operation.

2 weeks before the surgery my parent received a phone call to say that the surgery was cancelled because the surgeon had looked at the scans again and realised it was more in-depth than first thought. So we came to Perth an 8 hour round trip to see a different surgeon at SCGH that would be helping with the surgery. We had been given a new date for the next month but the surgeon wanted my parent to have more scans and tests so that they were satisfied that they would be able to cope with the complexity of the surgery. So the surgery date was cancelled again, we came to Perth multiple more times for tests and appointments and was given another date for surgery for the start of this year. The surgery will be at SCGH but the Gynaecologic Oncologists from KEMH would also be there performing the surgery as well as the general surgeon from SCGH.

2 weeks before the surgery the doctor rang my parent to say that the operation was cancelled again, saying that the surgeon from SCGH couldn't attend that day. This was over 6 weeks ago and apart from me writing emails to try and find out when it will be rescheduled no one from the Gynaecologic Oncologists team or department has rang my parent to see how they are, how their pain is, explain anything to them!

It has been over 6 months since they were referred back to KEMH and my parent still has numerous tumours and no date in sight as to when they will be operated on. I am disgusted that it's 2021 and patients are still being treated like this! Where is your duty of care for your patients and how long does somebody have to wait to have cancer cut out of their body before it is too late and surgery is not an option anymore.

Dear saturnrb57,

I am sorry to read that your parent is requiring further gynaeoncology care and that the treatment they are requiring has been cancelled on multiple occasions with no follow-up from the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) Gynaeoncology team to date.

I acknowledge the emotional distress that can be caused when a loved one faces any type of medical treatment and it is unacceptable that your parent has not yet been contacted to rebook their surgery. WNHS and SCGH are working together to try and improve the timely care of patients who require complex care just like your parent.

Our service relies on this type of feedback so that we can continually review, improve and grow our service to ensure that patients are receiving the complex care, requiring multiple specialist teams from across different health services, that they need.

Your feedback has been taken very seriously and we would like to conduct a full investigation into these concerns. We would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss the concerns with your parent so that we can conduct the investigation. Contacting us will allow us to identify the correct situation and work towards a solution. The Women and Newborn Customer Service Unit (CSU) can be contacted on 6458 1444 so that this situation can be rectified for your parent.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham

Executive Director, WNHS

Dear saturnrb5,

I am so sorry to hear of the distress that you and your parent have experienced due to the cancellation of their surgery. SCGH has a genuine commitment to working with KEMH to improve access for patients with complex needs who require coordination of their care across the two sites. I would encourage you to contact the Women and Newborn Customer Service Unit (CSU) on 6458 1444 so that we can work with you towards a resolution of the issues you have raised.

Kind regards,

Janet
