"My appointment/s & wait time"

About: Hedland Health Campus / Outpatients

(as the patient),

I have been trying to get in to see the Gynaecologist since late 2020. It is now March 2021, I have now had 3 appointments, all have been cancelled on me (one cancelled a couple hours before I was due to go in). Then I made my 4th appointment.

Each time these appointments are made/cancelled I need to:

1. Re-arrange my working schedule and/or days (my job is reliant on advertising deadlines - which can cost a lot of money if not met), I work for a non for profit as well as freelance.

2. Organise pick up's (or back up pick up's in case appointments run late) from primary school/day care (currently my kids are in between 1 day care in South, 1 day care in Port and 1 school).

3. And organise with my partner who works, as we only have 1 car currently.

These things may sound small but wack them all together on top of a 40-hour working week and pop another 10hrs in for study and it quickly turns out to be a juggling act!

Recently, my 4th appointment, I waited just short of 2 hours to see the doctor, that day I was meant to be at work in Port, so 2 hours late + 40min travel time + 20min consultation.

Unfortunately, I believe this story is way too common up here in Hedland. I feel people are missing out on health necessities. I myself do not go to a doctor unless I have to, because of the 'f' around it is. Now, I need to make another appointment to see the specialist (in 6 weeks time - unless of course this is cancelled and re-scheduled) so I can see the doctor to only make another appointment to get a damn procedure that is the only thing that can confirm my medical worries.

Please, I feel I can not be the only person reading this scratching their head? Surely?

A shout out though to the admin staff at the front desk. They were very understanding and apologetic to me, and I am sure they have to deal with a lot of BS in my opinion.

Dear neptunedge86,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your recent experience at Hedland Health Campus regarding the challenges you have had in obtaining specialist appointments.

I am very sorry that we have caused you and your family stress and frustration and acknowledge how hard it must be to organise work and family commitments around scheduled appointments and how frustrating it must then be for these to be rescheduled at late notice.

We recognise that we have work to do to improve our outpatient processes, so next month we are conducting a workshop to review the specialist services and clinics to ensure we are providing the required services for members of the Pilbara community. We will be examining our processes and procedures, along with our workforce and service delivery models. This will provide us with valuable information and will form the foundation upon which we can begin to make service improvements and progress in providing care closer to home for Pilbara residents.

I understand that you have work and family commitments, but I wonder if you would be willing to attend the workshop and tell your story. We know that the telling of stories by patients and their families is a powerful way to drive the change we need to better serve our community’s needs. I would also like to ensure we provide you with a smoother path in future and would like to learn more about your experience. If you are happy to, please call me on 91741038 or by email at Louise.Steedman@health.wa.gov.au and we can talk about the next steps.

We are always very grateful to receive compliments and would like to thank you for your acknowledgment of the very busy Administration staff in OPD. I will make sure to pass on your appreciation.

Kind Regards

Louise Steedman

East Pilbara Operations Manager
