"Poor service and lack of care"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

My partner was experiencing severe pain in their upper abdomen (right) and as a result, we attended an after-hours GP. As soon as the GP saw my partner, they said that it was urgent to get my partner to emergency as they were suffering from Biliary Colic.

The GP prescribed my partner OxyContin and other pain killers to take immediately. My partner took the medication and we attended St George Emergency.. the triage nurse saw my partner and told them not to drink anything to allow for a scan.

We were then placed in a waiting area for over three hours with no communication or feedback. My partner's medication wore off and they were in severe pain. I asked staff for pain killers and they said they would bring some and they never arrived.

I made enquires as to what was happening and all I got told was that they were busy and we were next. That went on for two hours hearing the same thing meanwhile, I believe some of the staff were standing around gossiping and on their phones.

In my opinion, the service is disgrace and it is scary that the hospital system in Australia could be in such bad shape. If anything would happen to a loved one as a result of what I believe is such poor service and neglect, who would be responsible. Yet we all have to pay our taxes.

Dear muscadc69,

Thank you for your feedback about your recent experience in our Emergency Department.

I was very disappointed to read of the poor service and lack of care. I was also disappointed to read of the poor communication you and your partner experienced. It can be a very stressful time when a loved one is unwell and in pain.

I understand that you have been in contact with the hospital and we are working with you to address the issues you experienced during your visit.

I do hope that your partner is feeling better.

Yours sincerely

Paul Darcy
