"Birth experience"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my first child at KEMH late August 2020 and felt incredibly cared for by my midwives Liz and Sarah of the Midwifery Group Practice. Based on my experience they were wonderful listeners and communicated all the options of my birthing preferences clearly to me throughout my pregnancy. They also helped me navigate my fears and anxieties about the upcoming birth.

On the day I went into labour, I laboured at home until I was in established labour before going in to the hospital. We called our midwife who recommended we come into KEMH. Unfortunately when I arrived at KEMH in the afternoon, although the triage nurse confirmed I was indeed in established labour, there was no room available for me, the waiting room was full.

My husband and I waited for an hour in the corridor of the hospital. I was in established labour in a full and busy waiting room and this was certainly not how I had imagine my birthing experience to be. Our midwife greeted us in the waiting room but, I believe as she knew there were no rooms available this would have been a stressful time for her too. During this hour I felt we didn't receive any attention and none of the staff checked in to see how we were. My husband had to flag down a doctor to bring attention to our problem and try to get a room for me.

This is the only complaint I have about my whole birth experience. I did my best to labour in the corridor, with sunglasses over my eyes the block the glare of the lights and headphones to keep distractions to a minimum, but I feel that if I had been given a room right from the start I would have been able to journey through my labour more smoothly and not to mention, in private.

Dear rnrnrn

I am sorry for the long delay in providing you a response. I thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding your birthing experience with King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH), during what I am sure has been a very busy time for you and your family.

I am sorry to read that on your arrival to KEMH, there were no rooms available to you. I can understand how distressing this would have been for you and your husband, particularly as you were in established labour. The nature of obstetrics means there is always a degree of activity that cannot be planned, including having the exact number of beds required for every unplanned labour for that day. WA hospitals always work together to ensure all birthing mothers have access to midwifery care, and on some occasions, if needed and clinically appropriate to do so, there may be times when patients are transferred to another maternity hospital in relatively close proximity. This is done to ensure services are safe for our patients, their baby and our staff.

I am pleased to hear that in your case, you were able to birth at KEMH, though I do acknowledge your negative experience, including the fact you were not given any attention from the staff to see how you were going whilst labouring in the corridor. We take this type of feedback very seriously. Should you wish to have an investigation undertaken and an individualised response provided to you regarding your experience with KEMH, I would encourage you to contact the KEMH Consumer Liaison Service on (09) 6458 1444.

I would like to congratulate you on the birth of your child and thank you once again for your feedback. This type of feedback will assist our service in making improvements for our patients, particularly during the planning stages for our new hospital, which will be located on the QEII site.

I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Yours sincerely,

Jodi Graham
