"Trying to get shoulder surgery"

About: Albany Health Campus

(as a service user),

I went to see a specialist Dr at a medical centre in Albany late last year.

They advised I was a category 2 for surgery on a torn tendon in my left shoulder, they submitted my paperwork to the hospital & I rang the hospital a few months later to find out when my surgery would be to organise time off work. I was told that I had declined a date towards the end of last year for my surgery, which I knew nothing about & I believe the hospital had changed me to a category 3. I also believe there were over 120 patients ahead of me & my surgery would most probably be before late this year.

The specialist Dr did advise me a few months before that everything was 3 months behind with COVID 19, so early this year for surgery was probably possible?

They had advised me when I saw them last year that they would like to do my surgery at the end of March 21, which would be the off season for my work so I could have surgery & recovery whilst there wasn’t any work in the down time of the season & not lose too much money.

The stress & worry & so many phone calls have been hard, especially so far from home, interstate.

I went back to see the specialist Dr recently to see if they could help with getting my surgery before later this year & they were going to email the hospital.

Dear asteropefw85,

Thank you for reaching out to us via Care Opinion and for sharing your story. I am very sorry that there appears to have been a delay in having your shoulder repaired.

The Covid-19 pandemic and WA’s state of emergency had impacted on waiting lists for non-emergency surgery but we have managed to work through the backlog.

In order to give you a more precise explanation for your personal situation it would be really helpful if you would consider contacting me, AHC Operations Manager, Juan Clark via email at GS.Operations@health.wa.gov.au or call me on 9892 2620. I genuinely hope to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Juan Clark
