"Separated from my baby and left alone after caesarean"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Maternity Service

(as the patient),

I had a caesarean at Box Hill Hospital mid-2018. I had requested delayed cord clamping and to not be separated from my baby.

I was not given the opportunity for skin to skin with my baby until over an hour after the birth despite my baby and I both being well. My baby's cord was cut immediately against my wishes and they were weighed in the operating theatre without my consent.

I missed the first hour of my baby's life, and instead was left alone to listen to the surgical team talk about their next patient.

I understand the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends skin to skin contact as soon as possible and a delayed umbilical cord clamping for at least 30 to 60 seconds after birth.

I would like Box Hill Hospital to provide an explanation of why skin to skin contact and delayed cord clamping was not given to my baby.

Dear cubeyn87,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback from the birth of your child at Eastern Health’s Box Hill Hospital in mid-2018.

You have raised some very specific points in your post and in order for us to follow up your particular circumstances, I would like to invite you to contact one of our Patient Relations Advisors in the Eastern Health Centre for Patient Experience either by calling 1800 EASTERN or by emailing feedback@easternhealth.org.au. If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

I trust your child is thriving and hope we hear from you soon

Kind regards

David
