I had a caesarean at Box Hill Hospital mid-2018. I had requested delayed cord clamping and to not be separated from my baby.
I was not given the opportunity for skin to skin with my baby until over an hour after the birth despite my baby and I both being well. My baby's cord was cut immediately against my wishes and they were weighed in the operating theatre without my consent.
I missed the first hour of my baby's life, and instead was left alone to listen to the surgical team talk about their next patient.
I understand the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends skin to skin contact as soon as possible and a delayed umbilical cord clamping for at least 30 to 60 seconds after birth.
I would like Box Hill Hospital to provide an explanation of why skin to skin contact and delayed cord clamping was not given to my baby.
