"Lactation consultants - KEMH and generally"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA

(as a service user),

I had my first baby last month and wanted to breastfeed. It wasn't working out and was an incredibly stressful time, leading to a lack of sleep, a hungry baby and many tears. Unfortunately, I could not get an appointment with the lactation consultants at the Breastfeeding Centre (BFC) next to KEMH for a month as they were so full. When I did finally get my appointment, the lactation consultant (LC) was so knowledgeable and helpful - I only have positive things to say about the staff.

What I really wanted to say is that I feel the WA government needs to make breastfeeding and LCs a priority by putting more money into this resource - the health benefits of breastfeeding are hammered into us. However, I believe you really need an LC coming to see you on day 1 and then checking in once a week for a few weeks until breastfeeding is established as so many of us don't have a clue - it is really hard.

Dear februarymg84,

Congratulations on the birth of your child and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience with the Breastfeeding Centre at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

Our staff at the Breastfeeding Centre are dedicated to helping new mothers breastfeed successfully. Breastfeeding can sometimes be challenging but with determination and perseverance along with the individual attention from our Lactation Consultants (LC), we aim to empower and support women to successfully breastfeed.

We are currently recruiting more lactation consultants to the Breastfeeding Centre of WA in an endeavour to reduce the wait times for mothers having their first appointments with the service.

I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
