I had my first baby last month and wanted to breastfeed. It wasn't working out and was an incredibly stressful time, leading to a lack of sleep, a hungry baby and many tears. Unfortunately, I could not get an appointment with the lactation consultants at the Breastfeeding Centre (BFC) next to KEMH for a month as they were so full. When I did finally get my appointment, the lactation consultant (LC) was so knowledgeable and helpful - I only have positive things to say about the staff.
What I really wanted to say is that I feel the WA government needs to make breastfeeding and LCs a priority by putting more money into this resource - the health benefits of breastfeeding are hammered into us. However, I believe you really need an LC coming to see you on day 1 and then checking in once a week for a few weeks until breastfeeding is established as so many of us don't have a clue - it is really hard.
