"Amputated finger"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as a service user),

I amputated my middle finger on my left hand recently. I fasted every day from 6am, my parent missed a funeral and my partner took unpaid time from work expecting me to have surgery ASAP. Instead, I believe people with carpel tunnel were operated on ahead of me, all the while my bare and rotting hand is yet to be operated on 3 days later. I have never seen such a joke of priorities in my life.

Dear squatpq78,

Please accept my sincere apologies for your experience whilst waiting for surgery and for the delay in getting you to theatre for the surgery you needed. I have been informed that the demand for urgent surgery has been higher than in previous years which may have impacted on the timeliness of obtaining the operation you required. I would like reassure you, all patients requiring emergency surgery are prioritised in accordance within the recommended time frames for waiting which are monitored to safeguard patient outcomes.

I am so sorry your family were also affected by the delay in surgery. It must have been difficult to have missed the funeral. Your feedback is valuable and we are committed to excellence in care, and it is through getting feedback from our patients we can continue to improve. Care Opinion is an anonymous platform and I would really like the opportunity to fully investigate the issues you have raised regarding the delay in receiving the urgent surgery you required. I would appreciate it if you could contact me on SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au with your best contact number and time to call.

All the best continuing to recover from your surgery.

Kind regards,

Jon

Director of Nursing and Support Services
