"Breaking the fast"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Day Procedure Unit (DPU - 1 West)

(as a service user),

I recently had eye surgery at Sydney Eye Hospital. I was impressed by the staff of the hospital and cannot praise them enough.  Everyone I encountered who was involved in every aspect of caring for patients or providing services was kind, caring, friendly and helpful,

A nurse expressed concern about a new cost-cutting measure under new management, which I understand they believe is detrimental to patients.

When I was taken back to the ward after surgery, a nurse brought me a wholemeal sandwich and a cup of tea which were very welcome and helped me recover after a long fast and the trauma of undergoing surgery.

But apparently, due to cost-cutting measures, I understand this was to change the next day. The sandwich was being replaced by two biscuits. I believe this is a bad decision.

Fasting time can be longer than perhaps envisaged by the new management.  My instruction was to fast from midnight, but my usual evening meal was much earlier.  And I think I don't need to point out that a biscuit is not food.

Dear asteropenf95,

Thank you for your feedback on the post-surgery snack and plan to reduce it to biscuits. I will discuss this with the manager to ensure sandwiches are available to those patients who are in need of further food due to clinical needs or longer fasting times. Your feedback is valuable and I appreciate your contacting us about this matter. Thank you for the praise of the staff in your care, it is heart-warming to hear of their kindness and respectful care.

Kind regards,

Jon
