I have had two bad experiences with Kalgoorlie Hospital.
I was meant to have an operation originally around three years ago. I went through the gp and got referred just before corona started - I went to the day surgery ward and the doctor said they couldn’t do this operation. They said we don’t have the facilities we will send you to Perth. I went back to work and waited to hear back and I never received a call or email about it coming up. There was no correspondence for over a year.
Back and forth, I went to every department in the hospital and finally got a hold of someone who knew what was going on. Long story short, in the meantime, my parent is a nurse in Darwin and they know the surgeon at Kalgoorlie. This surgeon then told me that the hospital does have the facilities to do my operation. I was meant to have it done recently and I got there mid-morning. No one came and saw me. I woke up about late afternoon and they came in and said we forgot about you. About 20 minutes later someone else came in and told me there was an emergency so we had to bump you. They have not rescheduled. This is the third time and so I decided I want to get transferred to Perth. I went in and explained this situation and they said to come in first thing the next day but I did not want to have it done there. I have no faith in the system.
I broke my left collarbone late last year when I fell off my bike. I'd had broken a collarbone before and I knew what the healing process was like so I ended up having 3 months off work. They said they would take an x-ray and the first doctor told me it would heal on its own, then another doctor came and told me it would need a plate in. Later, a third doctor advised that a plate should have been put in but it was too late, and that they will have to re-break it later and set it properly then. I didn’t want to do that, I have no faith in the hospital. In my opinion, the whole hospital feels like it’s run by children.
I do understand that things happen, but there was no correspondence and conflicting information. I was constantly getting taxis and having to take time off work.
