"Cancelled procedure"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a service user),

I was scheduled for a procedure last month. I arrived at the hospital after midday as advised after fasting all day. A few hours later that same afternoon I was told that the procedure had been cancelled due to an emergency. I saw my r in early May and they rescheduled for last week. I once again arrived at the hospital for treatment after fasting all day. This time the procedure was cancelled at mid-afternoon. I have another date for it in a few days' time and am very anxious about it being cancelled a 3rd time. The nursing staff were very supportive as I had become quite distressed.

I have had to take time off work to have the procedure done, have to arrange for someone to care for my child and my partner has taken time off from their job to take me to the hospital and pick me up. This has impacted me financially.

Dear beidyw95,

Thank you for sharing your care experience regarding having your procedure cancelled twice and understandably worrying that this will happen again. I am sincerely sorry this has occurred and hearing what you are saying I can only imagine the inconvenience and worry this would have caused you with time off work and other commitments needed with your family.

The Bunbury Hospital operating theatre and elective surgery waitlist teams try to avoid cancelling procedures wherever possible. When a decision to cancel a procedure does occur a range of factors are taken into consideration including the patients waitlist urgency category allocated by the surgeon, time on waitlist and any clinical urgency requirements. Sometimes cancellation for elective procedures is unavoidable due to emergencies or availability of beds, though I acknowledge this isn't a good or ideal care experience when it does occur and can cause significant disruption to our patient's lives.

We are working closely to look at how we can minimise the frequency of cancellation patients procedures occurs. I would really like to help understand and help with your current concerns and if you feel comfortable would ask that you contact our Waitlist Clinical Nurse Specialist whose name is Danaye, on 9722 1532.

I can say also that the Bunbury Hospital has been allocated funds from Government for a major redevelopment which will see the expansion of our operating theatre capacity and beds to help meet the needs of the growing population in the region. Whilst this doesn't help your immediate circumstances I do want to recognise that what you have experienced is not ideal and there are funds and planning to help address this for the community over the coming years

Kind regards,

Jeremy Higgins
