"Birthing/Post Birth"

About: Canberra Hospital / Maternity Services

(as the patient),

During my birth I had an amazing experience with the most beautiful midwives, they did such an amazing job throughout my whole birth experience at TCH.

Once I was on the ward things were so bleh, hardly no light in the room, no tv and the Baby Drs/Interns were, in my opinion, atrocious. One intern came into my room with another two clinicians the next day after I had birthed my twins and they had recommendations straight up for birth control. No caring questions, I literally asked Wtf is that all they come in for? I had just had two babies as if I’m going to have another one straight away and if it did happen who cares, that was not the most important thing, would have been great if they actually assessed me and my children.

Day one my milk hadn’t arrived yet, the babies were having colostrum. The Baby Dr was straight up recommending baby formula which I thought was pretty ridiculous!

I denied their recommendations because I wanted to give my body a chance. This was bull, no support for breastfeeding but you prefer me to give my babies formula. The next day my milk had come in so the previous day I was pumping and syringe feeding my twins as well as direct feeding. They had lost the normal 10% weight but we weren’t allowed to go home because their weight loss had to be monitored.. fair enough.

Each time the Baby Dr came in I felt there was no compassion, no questions on how we are doing, how we are feeling. Except for their recommendations for formula, so they had recommended to top up with formula.

No Support for breastfeeding.

I think these type of Interns and Drs need thorough training on compassionate care and supporting mothers & parents. I’ve had children before so I knew what my body was doing, it’s all a natural part of having children.

In my opinion, breastfeeding should be a main priority in this hospital, in-fact anywhere! Fair enough if someone doesn’t want to directly feed their child but if someone is willing to give it a go, give them support and what they need to give their children everything.

I signed myself out of this hospital as I thought the care from the Dr was really poor. A few of the midwives were quite great and I knew my babies were healthy and fine.

When you're a mum no matter how many times you’ve done it before, I believe being in a shoebox room with no support from the Drs is detrimental to any mother’s health and well-being.
