"Lack of infection control highly visible"

About: Royal Perth Hospital

(as a friend),

From what I saw, there was a lack of sanitation stations, none in lifts, none at entrance and exits or reception areas to each Dept and none at eateries.

There was a bloodied cloth on the ground outside Emergency Department from the morning when we arrived, it was still there three hours later when we left. I believe there is no visible cleaning or sanitation happening at this hospital.

I felt very dirty and sad for staff, patients and visitors that come here regularly. In my opinion, it’s filthy, absolutely disgusting and if COVID-19 entered this place it would be catastrophic to the city of Perth and the whole of WA. I pray I never need to return to hospital again.

Dear Service user 7,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. I am saddened to hear of your experience while attending Royal Perth Hospital and would like to apologise for any distress this caused you. Sanitation stations are located frequently throughout the hospital, including outside the lifts for the benefit of all staff, patients and visitors to use.

Please be assured if a hygiene issue is raised with a staff member they would usually deal with it in a timely manner. The hospital has cleaners who look after general public areas and they carry out scheduled cleaning to ensure the hospital is maintained to a high standard, including the Emergency Department. In addition, any soiled items should be removed straight away. I am sorry if this did not occur in this instance. While our cleaners do not attend to roads outside the hospital, when we are made aware of cleanliness concerns in close proximity to our hospital ground we take appropriate steps for it to be dealt with.

Thank you for letting us know of your concerns and reminding us of the importance of meeting the hygienic standards expected of us.

We appreciate your contribution to this important goal.

Kind Regards,

Dr Lesley Bennett

Executive Director
