"My child with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD)"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Took my child to ED as they were feeling sick then had a rash on their lower limbs, when we were in ED they went into panic mode as it was suspected they had RHD, they were given a needle for precaution and it was quite painful & traumatising experience for them as is early teens. Was devastated by the news that they may have RDH, took hours for me to convince them to have the needle.

Anyhow my child was added to the RHD Register & had the RHD Nurse Chantelle looking out for them & assisting me with the Paed Apps, she had administered the second Bicillan needle for my child, which to their surprise did not hurt and was such a pleasant & positive experience for my child, as she yarned with them about RHD, answered their concerns & gave the needle. I felt she was so sweet and genuinely caring towards my child.

Dear sagittariusdt35,

I’m sorry to hear your child has a potential diagnosis of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), and it is understandable you felt devastated by the news. Thankfully, your patience to convince your child to undergo the second Bicillan injection was successful.

I’m particularly pleased to hear Nurse Chantelle assisted you with the Paediatric appointments, that she administered the second injection without too much discomfort to your child, and that her professional and compassionate approach made them feel comfortable to discuss their concerns.

Nurse Chantelle has been personally contacted by the WACHS Patient Experience and Community Engagement team to thank her for the care she provided to your child, and that you appreciated her sweet and positive nature. We love to hear stories about our staff who promote a workplace culture of compassion and kindness.

Thank you for taking the time in sharing your and your child’s story. I wish you and your child all the very best on their health journey.

Kind regards,

Lisa Smith

Hello,

As a PPH staff member, I have assisted with families who have received the same diagnosis & have been dealing with it for a while & helped them navigate the system, however, when it is your own child, you turn into a mess and I did, but I felt Chantelle & Line Manager Tarmia helped me get through this.

So as a mum & a WACHS employee the support was much appreciated.

Chantelle's professionalism and her help during this stressful time was so much appreciated, she got him app's with the Paed & then with the Paed Cardiologist, all were booked pretty much straight away and it elevated my stress levels.

But her follow up & liaising with the Doctors in KHC, on the Ward and the visiting specialists was great.

Thanks to all staff, ED, Ward, Outpatients & within the team in Pop Health.
