"Staff so good to me"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / General surgery Jurien Bay Health Centre

(as the patient),

I was building a fence and this big bit of metal and took all the skin off my shin. It slid down my leg and made a big v-shape. I called my son and we decided to go to Durian instead of the local Nurses Station.

I saw Deb and Elvira and they were just so nice to me. They fed me and everything was going ok, but the minute they said I had to go to Perth (because the tip of the v-shape had gone black), I lost it and burst into tears. My son explained to them that it was because I have not left the area for years and had previously had a bad experience at a hospital in Perth. I didn’t want to go.

Deb and Elvira weren’t expecting it but were so quick to reassure me that I didn’t have to go to Perth and that I could go anywhere. They calmed me down and gave me lunch and my son drove me to Joondalup Hospital in Ward A2 where  I had surgery where they took skin off my thigh and put it on my shin as a skin graft.

I wanted to let Deb and Elvira know that I am ok. I also want to thank them because they were so good – attentive all the time, gave me painkillers and cleaned up my wound. They talked to the doctors, took pictures of the wound and sent it to the plastic surgeon. I said I would go to Joondalup Health Campus or Midwest.

I went to Joondalup and they were so good. There was a lot of waiting time but I think that my son took me to the wrong part when we got there. We went to ED but I think we should have gone next door to admittance as I had referral papers from Durian.

When I did get admitted, the woman was appalled and said she didn't know why they made me wait for so long and was sorry for that. But they were fantastic. She gave me good painkillers cause it was so painful. I was in a room by myself with a bathroom and a tv and I was so pampered. They were just so good. They also organised for Silver Chain to come to me twice a week to change the dressing.

Dear columbajn55,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion concerning your recent experience at Jurien Bay Health Centre.

I was very heartened to read of the care and attention you received from Deb and Elvira, who always do such a fantastic job providing compassionate care to our patients.

In reading your story I did think about how for many of our country patients the need to go to Perth could be a daunting experience. So I was pleased to read that their re-assurance was helpful to you and you continued to receive great care at Joondalup Health Campus.

I will have great pleasure passing your feedback on to Deb and Elvira and let them know that it went well for you.

Best wishes on your recovery.

Trenton
