A few months ago, I had a fall from a step and was taken by ambulance to your emergency department. After X-ray I was told that I had a dislocated patella, this was put back in place using gas and air.
I was then taken for another X-ray by a different Radiographer, I felt they were very rude, rough and uncaring. They removed the splint and told me to lift my leg, I told them that I couldn't (as it turns out with my type of injury it's impossible to lift your leg). They said of course you can and proceeded to lift my leg and told me to bend it, I couldn't so they did. I was crying out in terrible pain and their exact reply was that it's not their fault the Dr didn't write anything on the referral slip.
I was in pain and very upset at this stage.
All of the nursing staff I dealt with were very good.
Next day I had a CT scan and was told all ok, I could go home, take the splint off after 3 days. At no stage did any Dr or the Physiotherapist undo the splint and actually examine my leg, if they had, hopefully they would have noticed a more serious injury.
I went home and a Dr phoned that night to say that a follow up with specialist at another hospital was needed and they would organise the referral. Well, I have never heard another thing!
Luckily for me, I did not remove the splint as I had a feeling something was wrong. My GP organised an MRI scan which showed a complete rupture of Quadriceps tendon and Patella ligaments. I saw a surgeon very quickly and had surgery the day after I saw them. Apparently, this type of surgery needs to be performed as soon after the injury as possible, sadly for me this was 2 weeks after the injury! It is now nearly 8 weeks later at the time of writing this story, I am still in a full leg splint and face months of rehabilitation.
If only one of the Drs that I saw had actually undone the splint and looked at my leg, I know I had a CT scan but does that show soft tissue injury?
I was very happy with care from nursing staff and porters etc.
