I found out that I was having my second child, and after experiencing a midwife-led program in Victoria, I opted for the same here in WA. King Edward was our catchment hospital so I was very happy that we would get the care we needed. I met 2 midwives whom cared for me and Bub (and my husband) throughout our pregnancy and were very keen to investigate anything that wasn’t usual, but luckily we had no complications. The midwives were on call 24/7 for anything we needed, which was comforting as things can change so quickly! The best part was our birth! I went into labour at around 10pm, and my husband called the midwife as my contractions were a lot stronger and escalated rapidly. Less than an hour later we were on our way into the labour suite. Our midwife met us there, and after a quick assessment determined I was fully dilated and would deliver soon. Our birth went well and we were able to welcome our healthy baby girl into the world soon after.
We got discharged home after 8 hours, and in the evening that day a midwife attended our home to check on everyone. They came out again for the next few days. It was a fantastic experience and at every step, we felt supported, empowered and had our concerns heard.
The midwives are such a wonderful group of women, based on our experience, we couldn’t recommend them enough if you are considering following a midwife-led care model!
