"EDSSU"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I’m 11 weeks pregnant. I suffer grim HG during pregnancy (not a good feeling if you haven’t experienced it). I was admitted 2 weeks ago so I went back to St George ED took me 3 hours to see a doctor and another 3 hours for one of the nurses to give me fluids (even though the Dr had already put the IV drip).

Recently went to EDSSU (emergency department short stay unit) in the later evening, I felt the nurses were great, however in the morning a new nurse told me that I should try to drink juice or water. I told them that I couldn’t because I felt nauseous. After so much pushing from them I had a couple of sips, and they told me ok I’m taking the cannula out you can go home coz you are tolerating drinks.

I asked them what happens if I feel sick again and I can’t pass my medicine, they said well unfortunately that’s HG so pretty much you have morning sickness. I went home and later got a massive migraine (I suffer from them and they get worse if I’m dehydrated) I can’t swallow anything.

This nurse told me, you need to come back if you haven’t passed urine for days, and when I asked them if that is ok for the baby I recollect they said well I'm not a midwife. So how come, I believe, they were not so hesitant to send me home without knowing the consequences this could bring on my baby.

I have given birth there, I have always respected the service but this time around I'm disappointed and if anything related to this happens to me or my baby I’ll only blame your department.

I work at a hospital and I feel I have never experienced such a bad patient care service, I left the hospital in tears … I wish your staff were more 'humans' and, in my opinion, tried to understand patients.
