"Inappropriate treatment"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department Fiona Stanley Hospital / Rheumatology Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Took my child into emergency department recently for a very swollen knee due to their rheumatoid arthritis flare.

My child saw a trainee nurse, trainee doctor and a physiotherapist.

Got told nothing could be done and was sent home on pain killers. In my opinion, is the Rheumatology department that lazy that they couldn't come and drain my child's knee like my GP did the next day, 118mls to be exact.

I felt, it was a useless total waste of my day, had to take day off work. Not happy Jan

Dear Turtle75,

I am very sorry to read of your child’s rheumatoid arthritis and the recent flare up necessitating a trip to our Emergency Department (ED).

The ED staff do contact specialty services for specialty input if required. However, although we do have a paediatric Emergency Department and a Paediatric Ward, we do not offer a Rheumatology service specifically for children (I.e. under 18 years of age). Our Rheumatology team is not lazy; I can assure you they work extremely hard. We simply do not have a paediatric rheumatology service.

Without your child’s specific details, we are unable to properly investigate your child’s attendance. However, we would very much like the opportunity to properly investigate what happened. I invite you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) on 6152 4013 (business hours) or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au (anytime) and PFLS will be able to work with staff to complete a full investigation on your (and your child’s) behalf.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
