"Disappointed care"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was taken to Rockingham ED by their teacher from a camp late last month, followed by a sprain on their ankle. After a long waiting period, more than 2 hours for an X-ray. One of the clinicians reviewed my child's X-ray and told us, no fracture but cannot tell any tendon or ligament damage.

My child was in pain and their ankle was too swollen and clinician recommended crutches and they stated as I recall, I cannot hire crutches from there, have to go to the outside pharmacy to hire. That I realised most of the hospital doesn't hire crutches any more, but when I asked about a compression bandage as my child has to go back to their camp, the clinician told to me that my child needs compression bandage, but they are not doing that here, I was told I can buy from the pharmacy a figure 8 bandage. I was really shocked. No need to immobilise the ankle? I went to the pharmacy and bought crutches and bandages, and applied bandages myself at home.

Gp requested an ultrasound the next day and I believe the result was a complete tear on one ligament and a partial tear on another one. I was very angry and disappointed with the treatment of my child at Rockingham hospital.

Dear phaseyd85

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am very sorry to hear that your child waited a long time for an x-ray and you felt that you needed a second opinion on your child’s care. The Emergency Department (ED) has seen a significant increase in the amount of patients attending recently, which has led to an increase in wait times.

Our ED is committed to patient safety and quality care. It is standard practice that once a fracture has been ruled out, the treatment is symptom management. Crutches and compression bandages are no longer routinely used in this treatment. I apologise if this was not explained to you at the time.

I am concerned that you felt that RGH ED did not provide the care that we would expect and I encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Officers on 9599 4323 in order to provide your details so that we can investigate your concerns further.

Once again I am very sorry for your experience and I hope that you child is recovering well.

Kind regards

Kath Smith
