Royal Hospital for Women have rolled out an, in my opinion, fantastic initiative for postnatal mums. The physio dept (Guilia) invites new mums to a series of insightful physio-led postpartum webinars - one shortly after birth, a second 6 weeks postpartum and a third 12 weeks postpartum.
The relevant information is tailored depending on how many weeks postpartum, and provided in the, I feel, convenience of a webinar (knowing how difficult it is to get out of the house with a newborn/young baby). A text message is sent automatically to Mum, inviting her to participate online. It is an interactive session with an experienced physio. Genius.
And although I attended the prenatal physiotherapy webinar (which, I believe, was as important and had a lot of info relating to the prenatal stage), the postnatal information doesn’t truly hit home for a Mum until after the baby is born and the body’s changes are noticeable. In my opinion, the timing is of the postnatal webinar is therefore perfect.
I believe this initiative is amazing, and I’d hope to see it roll out across NSW/nationally. I feel it is a fantastic support for new mums who have many questions about their bodies following birth, “what’s normal, what isn’t, what should I look out for”, and it is a safe space to ask those questions that might otherwise not be asked in a physical group setting.
It has given me the confidence to book a postpartum pelvic floor check when I felt things were not as they seemed, whereas otherwise I’d never have had the confidence to do so. Thank you to the RHW physio dept.
In my opinion, this is a wonderful support for postnatal women, empowering us with knowledge and making the whole process accessible and easy! I believe we need more of these!
