"Paediatric Clinic"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Outpatient Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My child had an appointment booked recently the paediatric clinic for a medical reason.  I was originally quite impressed with the service, I was phoned within 2 weeks of the referral being received and had an appointment booked within 6-7 weeks from the referral being received.

In the afternoon of the day before the appointment, I was phoned to say the clinic was being cancelled and my child has been rescheduled to more than a month later (my partner and I had both arranged to take time off of work to attend the appointment).

The GP who referred my child reported the appointment would be considered a high priority.  From the referral to the date of the next scheduled appointment is over 12 weeks which to me, seems excessive for a high priority appointment. I am very disappointed with my child having to wait this long to be seen by a paediatrician for a reason that I understand to be considered to be a high priority.

Dear rainqr45,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story about accessing paediatric outpatient services at Geraldton Hospital. I am sorry that your appointment was rescheduled at short notice as I understand this would have been frustrating and disappointing for you and I appreciate this has caused you and your partner considerable inconvenience.

The WA Country Health Service - Midwest continues to see increased demand for our paediatric outpatient service and has been working to reduce delays in accessing this service at Geraldton Hospital, including establishing additional clinics to meet demand. To ensure your child’s needs are being met in a timely manner I would like to be able to look into your specific concerns and see what can be done to help support you and your family better. If you would like to do this I can be contacted on phone 9956 8742 or via email at Allan.Pelkowitz@health.wa.gov.au.

All feedback from consumers is valued and highlights where we need to focus our efforts to ensure the care needs of our communities are met. Again, thank you for providing feedback about our service and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Dr Allan Pelkowitz

Regional Medical Director
