"Smoking"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a service user),

Uncomfortable and potentially harmful to myself and others.

The brand new piazza entrance to the hospital is often littered with cigarette butts and smokers.

It’s disgusting. Despite an alleged no smoking policy there appears to be, I believe, little to no attempt to enforce it. In my opinion, a few signs clearly doesn’t cut it. Unhealthy and a really bad look.

Dear Choking,

Thank you for drawing our attention to the smokers and their cigarette butts in the new piazza entrance.

I agree that smoking is unhealthy, not only for the smoker but also for people around the smoker. As healthcare providers, we also recognise that smoking is a coping mechanism that provides comfort for some people, particularly when they are in a stressful situation or environment.

With regard to enforcing a non-smoking policy, our security guards do routine patrols across the entire campus which includes requesting smokers to move away from entrances.

I have requested the Security Team Leader to remind the security guards to highlight to smokers, the signage displayed and request that they move away from entrances.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
