"Waiting time in emergency department"

About: Warren Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I was up at the hospital with my child after being sent up there from the surgery with an infected ingrown toe nail removal and we sat there for over an hour waiting to see someone.

We were the only ones in the emergency department at the time, then a teenager with their parent came in and seemingly got seen straight away. Then a nurse came out gave us antibiotics without anyone looking at the toe or cleaning it and dressing it. We were there from for over an hour in the evening, by which time the chemist had closed.

Dear tazziedevil,

Thank you for sharing your care experience at Warren hospital Emergency Department. Reading your care experience, I can see you have concerns around the wait time for your child in the Emergency Department, that another patient may have been seen prematurely before your child was seen and concerns around the thoroughness of the assessment and treatment of your child’s ingrown toe.

I would like to offer my sincere apology for this experience, and I do hope your child is recovering. Regarding the wait time, a triage system is used in the Emergency Department which enables the clinical team to determine which patients are seen, according to their clinical urgency. Whilst at times patients may need to wait, it is vital that hospital staff are communicating regularly to patients who are waiting, and I am sorry if this did not occur.

If you are comfortable to call me, I would like to get your child’s details and investigate thoroughly their care and experience so we can prevent a similar experience for others and improve our service. My name is Karen Bradbury and I am the A/Clinical Nurse Manager at Warren Hospital and can be contacted on 9772 5235
